How to Make Shea Butter Creamy

Shea butter is the aromatic, naturally occurring fat from inside of the nuts produced by the Shea tree. It's often used in lotions and potions such as moisturizers, lip balm and skin treatments. In its normal state, it is firm, much like a hard stick of butter. For cosmetic applications, it is helpful to cream the Shea butter so that it is easier to apply or to blend with other oils and fragrances.

Instructions

Fill a stock pot half-way with water and bring it to a low, easy boil. Place the glaas bowl on top of the pot and add the raw shea butter. Reduce heat to a low simmer.

Use the wooden spoon to break up and stir the shea butter. When it's about 75% melted, remove the bowl from the top of the pot and set it on the counter. The remaining shea butter pieces will continue to melt in the rest of the hot liquid. Stir it as it begins to set.

Continue stirring and breaking up any remaining shea butter with the spoon. As it cools and begins to resolidify, stir faster, whipping the shea butter. The addition of air as you whip the setting mixture will create a creamy consistency.

Store the shea butter in a clean container with a lid. If it hardens again, whip it with a spoon to restore creaminess. Microwave for 30 seconds, if necessary, to re-soften it.
