Types of UV Lamps

Ultraviolet (UV) waves reflect the electromagnetic wavelengths put out by light that is in specific ranges. The UVA range is between 315 to 400 nanometers, while UVB wavelengths land in the 280 to 315 range. Short UVC light waves fall in the 200 to 280 nanometer range. UV lamps in various ranges are used for a wide range of purposes.

Short UVC waves are deadly to living cells and are primarily used to kill germs.

The blacklight that causes fluorescent colors to glow is created from UVA lamps that emit waves from 345 to 400 nanometers.

Tanning UVA lamps in the 315 to 345 nanometer range provide the most bronzing rays.

Tanning booths utilize UVB lamps to provide a longer lasting tan because the skin absorbs the waves easier. UVB rays are the primary source of skin cancer.

Incandescent ozone lamps are round and utilize mercury ultraviolet rays to kill bacteria when flashed in short bursts.
