The Effects of Tanning on Stretch Marks

Many people have stretch marks; these can occur during puberty, because of a pregnancy or due to weight gain. Stretch marks are difficult to disguise, but when summer comes around, many people start looking for stretch mark remedies. Laying in the sun or using a tanning bed will likely not be helpful.

Stretch Marks Do Not Tan

Stretch marks occur when the skin is damaged. They are the same as scars. If you have other scars on your body, you know they won't tan. No matter how much you expose your stretch marks to the sun or to rays inside a tanning bed, they will remain silvery-white.

Effects of Tanning

Tanning will likely make your stretch marks more pronounced. The stretch marks won't change color, but the rest of your skin probably will. That means that the stretch marks will stay silvery-white, but your skin will become darker. When the difference in the shades of your skin and your stretch marks becomes more pronounced, the stretch marks will be more noticeable.

Sunless Tanning

Sunless tanning can help disguise the appearance of stretch marks. Sunless tanners, such as spray tans in salons or creams and sprays you can buy in stores, will temporarily dye the surface of your skin. Because of that, your skin, including the stretch marks, will have a more uniform coloring.
