How to Make Ayurvedic Soap

Ayurvedic medicine focuses on treating ailments through the three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. Each dosha requires specific treatments, including how the body is cleansed. If you make your own soaps, you can customize them to suit your dosha type.

Instructions

Heat the olive and coconut oils over medium-low heat.

Place a metal meat thermometer in the pot. The temperature will need to reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

Put on the gloves and goggles. Pour the lye and water into the beaker. (Note: Avoid breathing in the fumes.)

Place the other thermometer in the lye solution. The temperature must reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pour the lye solution into the oils.

Stir the mixture until it reaches a gluelike consistency.

Add essential oils and stir well. For the vata dosha, use spikenard, ginger and licorice to warm up the body. For the pitta dosha, rose and winter cherry soothe and cool the body. For kapha, lemongrass and grapefruit invigorate.

Pour the mixture into soaps molds. Then place the molds in a dark room for 8 weeks to cure.

After the soaps have cures, remove them from the molds. Use them up to three times per day.
