How to Get an Even Tan With Self-Tanner

Self tanners are a safe alternative to sunbathing. You get the same look without having to worry about skin damage, wrinkles or too much exposure to UV rays. Most products use a color additive called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It reacts with your skin cells to darken the skin's appearance. The tan lasts for days. Self tanners have evolved from the days of orange streaks, that's for sure. Now, they boast streak-free application.

Instructions

Buy a self tanner that's meant for a light or medium tan. If you try to go too dark, it will look fake.

Wash and exfoliate your skin before applying the self tanner. Women should also shave their legs first.

Apply the self tanner to the palm of you hand. Rub it evenly and lightly across your skin, covering the entire area.

Use less self tanner on the rough parts of your skin like the elbows, knees and ankles.

Wash your hands to get all the tanner off. If you let it sit too long, it will discolor your palms.

Squeeze some of the self tanner onto a foam makeup sponge or cotton ball. Apply it to your face, making sure to emphasize parts that would naturally be hit by the sun--your forehead, cheekbones and nose. Use the same method to apply tanner to your hands and fingers.

Wait for the product to completely dry then re-dress. Your tan should last about a week.
