Types of Stretch Marks

The term stretch marks is a misnomer, because they are not the result of stretched skin, but rather the result of scar tissue building up on the epidermis. The scar tissue can take on a different appearance due to genetic factors, overall skin health and a person's lifestyle habits.

There are stretch marks that appear as deep gashes in the skin, typically purple or red. Others are thin and silvery or gray, and may be slightly raised. Some stretch marks are comprised of bumps and ridges, characteristic of thick scar tissue.

Stretch marks may change in appearance over time, fading in color or reducing in length.

Stretch marks commonly appear during periods of rapid weight gain, such as during pregnancy, growth spurts or body-building.

Some stretch marks create patches of itchy, damaged or dry skin. They may remain in clusters, typically around the breasts, upper arms, stomach, backs of the knees, thighs or buttocks, for the rest of your life.

Maintaining skin elasticity and overall health is the best way to battle stretch marks. Drink plenty of unsweetened water and a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly leafy greens and berries with skin-protecting antioxidants.
