Skin Discoloration from Chemical Peel

People who have certain skin problems may turn to a chemical peel for help. Acne, wrinkles and uneven skin tone can be helped with a chemical peel. Although a wonderful treatment for some, there can be side effects.

Although chemical peels are used to even out skin tone, certain skin types can suffer permanent skin discoloration from a chemical peel. Also, those with a history of cold sores can have outbreaks after a chemical peel is performed.

A chemical solution is spread on the face to remove layers of skin. Anesthesia is usually not needed.

Alpha-hydroxy acid, phenol, or trichloroacetic acid may be used, depending on the type of chemical peel.

With a mild peel, the skin will be red and flaky for about 3 to 5 days. A deeper peel will require more recovery time. Sometimes there is temporary skin discoloration.

Women who are pregnant, people who have a history of brownish skin on the face, and women who are taking birth control pills are at a greater risk of having skin discoloration from a chemical peel.
