How to Know Skin Types

There are a variety of skin types. Knowing your skin type will greatly increase your chances of having a clear face and healthy, youthful skin. Your skin type will probably change throughout your lifetime, and possibly even from season to season. Answer some questions about your skin to find which type you have.

Instructions

Consider how your skin is 30 to 60 minutes after cleansing. If your face begins to shine, then it is oily. If it is tight and itchy, you have dry skin. If your face is shiny in some places and tight in others, you have a combination of oily and dry skin. If your skin feels clean and soft, you have normal skin.

Pay attention to where your skin gets shiny throughout the day. If it gets shiny only in the t-zone (forehead, nose and chin), it is combination skin. It your cheeks and upper lip get shiny as well, you have oily skin.

Look for any redness in your complexion. This comes from irritations in your skin from face products and water if you have dry skin. Most products will irritate the skin, causing burning, itching or redness if you have dry skin. Use cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup specifically for sensitive skin.

Notice fine wrinkles or discolorations. This comes from dry skin. If the fine wrinkles or discolorations are only on your cheeks, you may have combination skin. Excessive dryness can cause tiny wrinkles, visible tiny red veins or dark spots.
