An ingrown hair is when a hair becomes twisted and starts growing back into the skin. When this happens, the surrounding area normally becomes inflamed into a red bump. Getting rid of an ingrown hair and the red bump that it creates isn't complicated. However, be careful to not irritate the skin further or cause an infection. Ingrown hairs can be infrequent or commonplace for people.
Instructions
- 1
Take a warm shower and use a gentle exfoliating scrub on the surface of the skin where the ingrown hair bumps are located. If your ingrown hair is on your face or neck, choose an exfoliant that's designed for sensitive facial skin.
2Sterilize a needle with rubbing alcohol. Dip the needle in a small amount of rubbing alcohol for several seconds. Allow the alcohol to dry completely before continuing.
3Create a compress with very hot water and a towel. Apply the compress to the ingrown hair bumps for at least 1 minute. This heat, along with the heat from the earlier shower, helps open the pores and may provide easier access to the hair.
4Use the tip of the needle to gently free the hair from the bump so it's growing as normal. Try to cause as little damage to the surface of the skin as possible. At this point, you can remove the hair completely with a pair of sterilized tweezers or you can leave the hair alone.
5Wash the area with an antibacterial soap. Bumps can become infected after ingrown hairs are removed. Pay close attention to the way the bumps heal over the next day or two.
